Akasak offers you the opportunity to enjoy one of the most cherished aspects of traditional Japanese Culture — Tatami Rooms for your dining pleasure. Tatami Rooms are something of a rarity among the Japanese Sushi Restaurants of Seattle, but they are an essential part of the Japanese dining experience and Chef Lee is proud to be able to offer a number of authentic Tatami rooms to complement your dining experience.

The handful of Seattle's Japanese Sushi Restaurants that offer the unique Tatami environment are tied to the long history of Japanese Culture. Over a thousand years ago "Tatami" originated as a simple mat of rice straw used to provide comfort and warmth for sitting or sleeping. Eventually the make-up of these simple mats evolved to improve their softness. Tatami eventually became popular with Japanese Nobility and served as a means of displaying the high social ranking of those persons of privileged rank — as commoners sat on the bare ground instead.

Eventually Tatami became popular with the Samurai, Merchant and Craftworking Classes of Feudal Japan as their comfort and convenience were well suited to the Tea Party oriented culture of the Edo era.

By the 15th century Tatami became a permanent soft covering for the entire floor of a room. In fact "tatami" became a commonly used means of indicating the size of a room by referencing the number of 3 x 6 foot tatami it took to cover the floor of the room in question.

Tatami are uniquely suited to the humid Japanese climate - and while the Japanese Sushi restaurants of Seattle may not have to concern themselves with humidity comparable to that of the Far East - Tatami in Japan provide comfort in a number of unique ways. The rice straw of the tatami act as a humidity regulator - the rushes readily absorb humidity and make the Tatami room comfortable. They provide a cooling touch in the summer, and help to insulate against the winter chill. Their natural fragrance provides a soothing scent calming the spirit and relaxing the mind and body.

The rich history of Tatami lends itself to a dining experience that is unique and stimulating. Akasaka is happy to offer traditional Japanese comfort and intimacy with the tantalizing mix of classic Japanese and Korean fair. Akasaka offers several Tatami rooms for your enjoyment. Sit, relax and let the staff pamper you while you enjoy a truly authentic Japanese dining experience, in one of Seattle's Premier Japanese Sushi Restaurants.
